Igls is a small resort that lies conveniently close to Innsbruck in the Austrian Alps. It lies on a plateau at an altitude of nine hundred metres and overlooks the Inn Valley. It is a beautiful spot and being so close to Innsbruck, it is a ideal choice for those with non-skiers in their party. The resort offers twenty kilometres of piste but with the appropriate lift pass, there are free connecting buses to almost three hundred kilometres of the Olympia Skiworld Area, including the Stubai Glacier. It is plain to see that all levels of ability have a good choice of slopes.
Novices can find several nursery slopes close to the resort where, with the help of expert tuition, they will quickly gain in confidence and move to more exciting terrain. Intermediates have a wide choice. There is an exhilarating red run from the top of Patscherkofel, that peaks at two thousand two hundred metres. It gives a seven kilometre run back down to the village. The scenery on the way down is truly spectacular. Advanced skiers & boarders can test their skills on the olympic downhill run as well as further afield in the Olympia Skiworld. As always there is good off-piste skiing but be sure to do so with an experienced mountain guide. There are long cross country trails but you need to take a bus to reach them.
With the resort height at nine hundred metres and the highest lift at just under twenty-three hundred metres the resort is fairly snow sure throughout the season. The snow making facilities cover one hundred percent of the slopes. The season lasts from the second week in December until the end of March. The resort is also popular in summer with climbers, mountain bikers and hill walkers. Many regional airports have direct flights to Innsbruck. With a transfer time of less than thirty minutes, you can be on the slopes in next to no time. You can check on Cheekytrip to see if your local airport offers ski & snowboard holidays to Igls.
