Opatija is a wonderful coastal destination in Croatia and is where many consider Croatia coastal tourism to have begun. It is a relatively small town located around 18km from the popular town of Rijeka. It has a very peaceful and relaxed way of life but also has plenty to do and see in and around the town and broader region. It is a great holiday hotspot if you are travelling with family, friends or a loved one!
There are all sorts of interesting attractions to get stuck into whilst you’re in Opatija. The ‘girl with the seagull’ statue is one of the more iconic aspects of the region but has a sad tale attached to it. A local count lost his life at sea during a storm in 1891 and this statue was erected to commemorate him. For more culture, Opatija is home to the Museum of Croatian Tourism. It is housed within the striking and beautiful Villa Angiolina.
Once you are all done with the sightseeing, make sure you spend a nice relaxing day at the beach. Opatija has a great range of beaches to choose from, with soft sands and clear waters to make them all extremely welcoming. There is even a beach for dogs if you happen to have your pooch with you. When the evening comes, a stress-free stroll along the promenade is highly recommended. Here you will find an abundance of top-quality bars, restaurants and cafes.
