If you’re flying to Türkiye anytime soon, here’s a new rule you’ll want to pay attention to — or risk an unexpected fine before your holiday even begins.

The Turkish civil aviation authority has announced that airline passengers will now face fines if they stand up before the seatbelt sign is switched off after landing. The move comes after a surge in passenger complaints about fellow travellers jumping up too soon and rummaging through overhead lockers before the aircraft has safely parked.

The new regulations officially came into effect earlier this month, and though the guidance from the authority doesn’t specify an exact fine amount, Turkish media reports suggest it could be around £50 per offence.

Why The Crackdown?

According to the aviation authority, there has been a “serious increase” in incidents where passengers stand up prematurely, sometimes reaching for overhead baggage while the plane is still taxiing. Not only does this behaviour cause frustration for others on board, but it also poses a safety risk — which airlines and regulators are keen to eliminate.

Turkey is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, welcoming tens of millions of visitors each year. With busy flight schedules and high passenger volumes, authorities are clearly looking to encourage safer, more orderly disembarkation.

What You Can Expect On Your Flight

If you’re flying to Turkey, be prepared to hear an updated in-flight announcement after landing. Airlines are now required to remind passengers that seat belts must remain fastened, and that standing or accessing overhead lockers is prohibited until the seatbelt sign is turned off.

Failing to follow this instruction could result in you being reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation as a “disruptive passenger”. Turkish Airlines, the country’s national carrier, has already updated its landing announcements accordingly.

A Word To The Wise Traveller

While it’s always tempting to jump up and grab your bag to be first off the plane — especially after a long flight — this is one habit to leave behind when travelling to Turkey. The fine may not break the bank, but it’s certainly an avoidable hassle that could sour the start of your trip.

Instead, sit back, relax, and wait for the familiar ding that signals it’s safe (and now legal!) to stand.

Final Thoughts

Air travel etiquette is something we’ve all encountered in different forms, but Turkey’s new approach adds legal weight to a rule that’s often ignored. Whether you’re a seasoned flyer or a first-time visitor to this beautiful country, now’s the time to brush up on post-landing patience — your wallet will thank you!
