Daniel Riley May 31st, 2022 2,878 views

We often see the same countries and the same destinations recycled over and over again in travel magazines, online and on television. But what about some of the more hidden gems? Your next beach holiday doesn’t have to be overcrowded and mainstream. Today we take you through our five favourite alternative beach breaks…

Side - Turkey

Side is a stunning destination in Turkey that is often overlooked for the likes of Antalya and Bodrum. This seaside resort experiences just as good weather, amazing beaches, great things to do and usually significantly less tourists than other resorts.

One of the main attractions in Side is the incredible Temple of Apollo. The historic ruins date back to the second century AD and the temple stands perched overlooking the town. It is still in remarkable condition given its age. The Manavgat Waterfall is another standout feature of Side. Not only does it provide incredible backdrops for photos but also plenty of recreation space for picnics, swimming and other outdoor activities.

Santorini - Greece

Santorini is one of the most picturesque destinations in the world and should be on everyone’s bucket list. The white-washed buildings, spectacular sunsets and dazzling blue waters are what makes this place one of the first photos on any travel brochure.

The island boasts a number of incredible things to do and see, and perhaps none will be more memorable than the experience of a Santorini sunset in Oia. This cliff-top town is the ideal place to enjoy the vibrant colours. We recommend either a stroll through the town or booking a restaurant for the best views. There are also a number of amazing beaches around the island, ancient ruins, volcanoes to hike and much, much more.

Tucepi - Croatia

Tucepi is another somewhat hidden gem that is often overlooked for other European beach holidays. However, it offers everything that you could possibly want from a beach holiday and plus many added bonuses. Superb accommodation, outdoor activities and beautiful weather are just a few of things to expect from Tucepi.

As well as an abundance of great beaches to relax on, Tucepi also provides plenty for the outdoor adventurer. Biokovo Nature Park is packed full of amazing things to discover including a hike up the main mountain which provides phenomenal views. Kayaking tours, ziplining and mountain biking are just a few of the other activities that you can get stuck into in Tucepi.

Cape Verde

Cape Verde is starting to gain quite a reputation for being an exceptional beach holiday with plenty of relaxation, cocktails, picturesque views and amazing weather all-year-round. Even though it is starting to get the recognition it deserves, we still feel that it is a great ‘alternative’ to some of the more traditional beach destinations.

Cape Verde is split into a number of islands, each with their own charm, culture and things to do. One of the best is Sal where you can go horseback riding. The times are offered throughout the day but we recommend a sunrise or sunset ride for the best experience. If you head over to Fogo Island you can climb Pico de Fogo - the highest point of the islands. Dune buggying in Boa Vista is also an honourable mention, as is just kicking back and relaxing on any one of the archipelago’s beautiful beaches!

Sharm el Sheikh Beach

Sharm El Sheikh

Despite being largely covered in sand, most people don’t tend to think of Egypt immediately as a beach holiday destination. However, Sharm El Sheikh is beginning to change that. With soft golden sands and calm seas, it is the perfect alternative beach holiday. However, it is also much more than that too…

Sharm El Sheikh is actually one of the world’s top diving destinations and people flock from all over the world to its reputable waters. It is mostly geared towards those with experience but there are also opportunities for beginners too. There is also a national park nearby, the biblical Mt.Sinai and other temples and tombs to discover in the surrounding region.
