Plymouth

Plymouth is a city on the beautiful southern coast of Devon, with an enviable waterfront location providing a stunning backdrop to any short break, or holiday. With warm summers and mild winters, Plymouth is a popular destination for families, couples and friends who come to relax and take advantage of a wealth of opportunities for fun and adventure all year round.

As well as the convenience of a modern city centre, Plymouth has a rich, colourful heritage and invites visitors to take part in and enjoy a range of seasonal events and activities. There is so much to see and do in Plymouth, and a short break can mean anything from a relaxing shopping trip with plenty of places to eat and drink, to an exhilarating, adrenaline filled adventure.

Enviable waterfront location

The spacious, pedestrianised city centre has a distinctly continental feel with open spaces and boulevards lined with trees; a great place to do some shopping or have a coffee or a bite to eat in a pavement cafe or cosy bistro. In the centre of town, the modern Drake’s Circus shopping centre has over sixty shops and restaurants to choose from, with many high street favourites and well known brands. For more unusual purchases, wander around the Barbican and Sutton Harbour areas to find unique pieces of art and handcrafted items.

The winding cobbled streets around Sutton Harbour and the Barbican, are an ideal opportunity to discover some of the city’s historical and architectural treasures. The Harbour Heritage Trail records the maritime history of this magical place, where the Tudor ships that defeated the Spanish Armada set sail , and where the Mayflower departed, taking the first English settlers to America in the 1620s. There are plenty of small shops and restaurants in this area, and historic gems to discover, such as the fragrant Elizabethan Gardens, and the atmospheric Tudor Rose tea rooms, serving homemade cakes and traditional English afternoon tea. Nearby, the National Marine Aquarium has an awesome collection of sea life including the deepest viewing tank in the UK.

Visit the iconic area of Plymouth Hoe with spectacular views across the Sound, where Sir Francis Drake finished his game of bowls before setting off to defeat the Spanish Armada. This open area is a great place to sit and relax on a sunny day near the red and white stripes of the lighthouse known as Smeatons Tower. The Hoe hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year including the British Fireworks Championships in August. Nearby, the Royal William Yard has developed a reputation as a centre for arts and culture. A fabulous collection of Grade 1 listed buildings play host to regular events and concerts with outdoor theatre and cinema and a regular arts and crafts market. The nearby Royal Citadel has been standing guard over Plymouth since the seventeenth century and is well worth a visit.

Historical & architectural treasures

Plymouth boasts some of the most beautiful coastline in the country and the golden sandy beaches at Wembury and Bovisands are ideal for sunbathing, swimming or a range of watersports including kayaking, canoeing, surfing and sailing. For those that prefer dry land, head out for a stroll along the clifftops on the the South West Coast Path. Originally used to look out for smugglers, this is now a great way to explore the breathtaking beauty of the South Devon coast. To explore the countryside by bike, the Devon coast to coast cycle route runs north to south through the county including a stretch through the centre of Plymouth.

Plymouth has accommodation to suit every type of short break or holiday. Choose to stay in the heart of the action in a city centre hotel or guesthouse with easy access to the shops and main attractions, or opt for a more tranquil break with a self catered cottage by the sea or a bed and breakfast in one of the tiny fishing villages nestled along the coastline.
