If you're due to renew your passport or apply for a new one, it's worth knowing that the cost is going up next month. The Government has announced a price increase taking effect from 8 April, which will see the cost of a standard UK adult passport applied for online rise above £100 for the first time, up 8% from £94.50 to £102.
The increase applies across all application types. A child's passport applied for online will rise from £61.50 to £66.50. For those applying by post, adult applications will go up from £107 to £115.50, and children's postal applications will increase from £74 to £80. If you need your passport urgently, the one-day Premium Service for adult applications made within the UK will rise from £222 to £239.50.
The changes are subject to parliamentary approval but are expected to go ahead as planned. The Government has stated that the additional revenue will help the Home Office move towards a system that covers its own costs through user fees, reducing its reliance on general taxation.
It has also been clear that no profit is made from passport applications, the fees go toward processing applications, consular support overseas for things like lost or stolen passports, and the cost of processing British citizens at UK borders.
It's worth putting this in context. Next month's increase follows rises of 7% in each of the last two years, and 9% in 2023, meaning passport costs have climbed steadily and consistently in recent years.
If you're in a position to apply before 8 April and your passport is due for renewal in the near future, doing so now would save you a small but not insignificant amount, particularly if you're applying for multiple passports within a family.
