New York city is one of the most popular tourist destinations in America, and with good reason. This amazing, vibrant, crazy city is packed full of things to do and see, and is an incredible place to visit at any time of year. Read on to discover what to see and where to stay in the city that never sleeps.

Things to do:

One thing is for sure, on a short break to New York City, you will never be bored. A trip to New York usually means a stay on Manhattan Island which is what most visitors class as 'the city'. Many of the most famous attractions are located in the midtown area, which makes this the best place to stay. There are so many iconic buildings and places within walking distance, that it sometimes feels like you are walking around a movie set, with something new to discover around every corner.

Be sure to visit:

Central Park

No trip to New York would be complete without a wander through the park. This incredible space in the heart of the city is where New Yorkers go to relax, to exercise, and just to enjoy a break from hectic city life amongst the trees, bridges and fountains. Take a wander through the trees to see street theatre and live music, or see the park in style from the back of a traditional horse and carriage.

Empire State Building

Part of the famous Manhattan skyline, this was once the tallest building in the world. Travel to the 102nd floor for breathtaking views across the city.

New York

Times Square

One of the coolest places on the planet, Times Square is bright, busy and noisy 24/7. This is the place to come to see a Broadway show, do some shopping or just sit back and watch real New York life happening around you.

Grand Central Station

As well as being one of the busiest railway stations in the world, this historic building is worth a visit just to look at the ceiling! As well as trains, the station is full of shops and restaurants including the famous Grand Central Oyster Bar.

New York

5th Avenue

Home to Trump Tower and some of the most exclusive fashion brands in the world. Whether you are looking for high fashion, the newest technology or memorabilia, 5th Avenue is the place to be. Many big names have their flagship stores here including the innovative underground Apple store which has become a tourist attraction in its own right.

Statue of Liberty

To visit the most famous statue in the world, make your way to downtown and board a ferry to Liberty Island. This is the highlight of most visits to New York, standing next to Lady Liberty and looking back at the magnificent Manhattan cityscape.

Freedom Tower and 911 memorials

Much of the downtown area around the former twin towers site has now been redeveloped and a visit to the memorial garden can be an extremely moving experience. A trip to the 102nd floor of the newly completed Freedom Tower is an adventure in itself with the best lift ride ever! The Observatory provides an awesome 360 degree view of the city including liberty island and the Hudson River.

Where to stay:

To be in the heart of the action and walking distance from the most famous sites, midtown is the most convenient location to stay. As this is the most popular area for tourists, some of the hotels can be a bit pricey, but with plenty of well known chains, there are often good deals to be found if you are prepared to shop around. For smaller boutique hotels with a more Bohemian feel, Greenwich Village in lower Manhattan is the place to stay. With a lively music scene and a laid back cafe culture, this area provides a pleasant contrast to the hustle and bustle of midtown.
