UK ban on flights to Sharm El Sheikh has been lifted

Chris Butler October 22nd, 2019 3,076 views

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has lifted its ban on flights to Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, following a four-year suspension.

The restrictions were introduced in October 2015 after a major terror attack led to fears about the country's airport security standards, but independent UK security firms have since overseen a review into its safety.

The Egyptian State Tourist Office has been urging the UK government to lift the ban for a while now, with the African country losing a great amount of revenue from UK tourists unable to travel. Before the ban, thousands of holidaymakers from the UK travelled to the popular resort on the Red Sea each year.

European countries like France and Germany had already lifted their ban on flights to Egypt prior to the UK's decision, and now hopes of a return to the high numbers of British tourists seen before 2015 have been restored.
