Cartagena is a charming city on the Costa Calida that is steeped in rich history. It has one of the world’s great natural harbours and rich mineral mines and is the perfect destination for those looking to unwind and immerse themselves in some truly authentic Spanish culture. From hidden World War Two shelters to ancient Roman theatres, there is plenty to discover in this magical part of the world.
Budget holidays to Cartagena are available from most major airports in the UK and since the route is so loved by travellers from all over, there is bound to be the ideal flight waiting for you. Cartagena is situated right on the coast of southeast Spain, so you can expect around an hour and 15-minute drive from Alicante airport. Make sure you check the Cheekytrip comparison site for more amazing deals to Spanish coastal destinations like this one. Direct flights to this part of the world usually take around 3 hours.
The best time to visit Cartagena is throughout the spring months and even into early autumn. July and August are the hottest months which actually might be the months to avoid for some, especially if they intend to do a lot of walking and exploring the area. Throughout the other months though, you can expect some reliable sunshine and a comfortable heat all day long. A bonus of this town is that it never gets overwhelmingly busy so you can usually find a great place to stay and quiet streets to roam.
There are plenty of amazing landmarks to see in Cartagena but without a doubt the standout one is the 2000 year-old Roman theatre. It was only discovered as recently as 1988 beneath the ruins of the Old Cathedral. In the museum you can find some of the artifacts discovered including a statue of Apollo. Cartagena is also the prime destination for anyone that enjoys a leisurely stroll. The harbour is gorgeous and on certain days you can walk right out onto the docks. The architecture of the city streets is simply sublime and some of the best that Spain has to offer. Head to the top of the hill just back from the harbour and you will find incredible views waiting for you of the surrounding region.
Cartagena is much more of a historical, traditional resort rather than a bustling, tourist beach resort that you can also find along the Costa Calida. Because of this, you won’t find any high-rise hotel complexes but instead, smaller apartments, villas, B&Bs and hostels. There are plenty of places to eat out - especially along the Calle Mayor - that specialise in tapas and seafood dishes. People sit out in the streets until the late evenings but there is not much in terms of nightlife here.
